Warwick Castle is a splendid and dramatic fortress rising majestically from the banks of the River Avon. It has been perfectly preserved including the grounds, towers, dungeons and staterooms. Its strategic location for military purposes was first recognized by Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great. She ordered the building of an earthen rampart here in AD 914. William the Conqueror established a motte and bailey fortress here in 1068 to hold the area and to secure his lines of supply. It was not until the twelfth century that stone structures began to appear at this site. The existing structures were built between the fourteenth and the eighteenth centuries. Warwick castle changed hands many times during the years. It was often granted by the crown as a reward to military commanders or others in favor of the king. It also was seized or taken as plunder during various battles. Warwick Castle is claimed to be the finest medieval castle in England. It is a very popular tourist destination. |
