from Lulworth Castle

While were touring, in our faithful little motor car, through the beautiful Snowdonia Mountains in north Wales, we took the opportunity to search out the Welsh Castle called Dolwyddelan. It is a lonely castle, sitting upon a hilltop guarding a mountain pass. Its neighbors are the beautiful hillsides and the mountain streams.

Dolwyddelan is a square castle built about 1200 for Welsh princes. It is rumored to be the birthplace of Llywelyn ap lorwerth, however it is more likely that he was born in a nearby castle which, has since vanished. In 1283 the castle was captured by England's King Edward I who maintained a military presence there for several years. It was eventually abandoned though in favor of the Edwardian castles built along the sea.

The climb to see the castle is reminiscent of many of the Welsh castles. The views of the mountains and the sheep inhabitants are well worth the visit.
