CAERLAVEROCK CASTLE

Every expectation that I have ever had of a medieval Scottish castle was met when I first saw Caerlavrock Castle. We drove up the drive and I caught my breath as I saw the castle standing in the morning mist. I could not wait to get out of the car to begin exploring and snapping my camera.

It has been said that Caerlaverock was probably one of the strongest fortresses of Scotland’s medieval castles. Its design is in a triangle shape with huge round towers at each corner. It was protected by a double moat, with the Irish Sea on one side, and the moorland with an arm of the sea on another. If an attacker decided to approach from the land he would encounter woods and marshland. The castle was built about 1270 and its survival in the shape that it is today bears witness to its strength.

We lingered and extended our visit to this castle to wander through the rooms and halls and to let our imagination take us to days gone by when it was a bustle of activity. It was a joy to pause on the ridge as we left to take in the view one last time.
