CASTLE STALKER
Castle Stalker is one of the more famous castles. Its picture has been used on calendars, in books and in many castle related items. You can imagine my excitement when I realized we would be in Argyllshire near Oban where this castle is located. It was a dreary rainy day when we arrived. The weather fit perfectly with the castle’s demeanor, but it was not friendly to our cameras.
Stalker is a strong rectangular simple keep with three stories. It sits on a small rocky islet in a Loch and a boat is required to reach it at high tide. Castle Stalker was built around 1540 as a hunting lodge. It has a tumultuous history and it changed hands back and forth and was used as a garrison for troops. It finally was abandoned in 1780 and was roofless by 1831. Lt. Col. Stewart Allward, who still owns the castle, restored it in the late 1960’s.
It was fantastic to be able to see this castle even though the weather was dreary. We look forward to returning one day when the sun is shining and we can arrange a tour.
