It was a serene summer day when we visited Cawdor Castle. The sky was blue with fluffy puffs of clouds and the first leaves were beginning to fall from the trees. So it was a stunning sight when we first saw Cawdor nestled in the green of the trees that surround it. Cawdor Castle is a magnificent and well-preserved castle built in the late fourteenth century. The house has had several additions including the parapet in 1454 and the three-story ranges, gabled and crowned with bartizans and corbelled-out chambers built on the sides of the keep in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The rooms are richly furnished with furniture and wall accessories. There are also three lovely gardens to explore. Cawdor Castle is privately owned and is the home of the Cawdor family to this day. However there are several amenities for visitors. It is open to the public every day from June until the middle of October. We found this castle to be well worth a visit. |
