Our castle hunting took us near Alford in Aberdeenshire in search of Craigievar Castle. We found the parking area and walked a short pathway when this lovely structure came into view. Craigievar Castle demonstrates some of Scotland’s best Baronial architecture. It was complete in 1626 and is so well preserved that it has almost all of its original features. The castle is seven stories tall and the contrast between the starkly plain lower floors to the highly decorated upper floors is striking. The pink-washed walls add to its fairy-tale like appearance. One of the round towers and part of the walls of the courtyard still remain. Originally there was a tower at each corner of the courtyard. The interior of the castle is said to be highly decorated with outstanding plasterwork in almost every room. We were not able to see the inside because the castle was not open for tours when we visited. |
