DUNSTAFFNAGE CASTLE

We found Dunstaffnage Castle on the west coast of Scotland just a few miles north of Oban At first glance the castle appeared to be an uninteresting box-like building, but closer inspection proved that impression to be wrong.

The castle was built in the thirteenth century and much of it still stands today. No doubt the massive natural rock that is the castle’s base contributes to that. Two of the castles round towers have survived as well as much of the impressive sixty foot high curtain walls. The gatehouse was built in the sixteenth century and has been restored. There are interesting remains of outbuildings on the grounds. There is also the remains of an ancient chapel in the woods a short distance from the castle.

We found this castle to be an interesting place and is worth a visit by serious castle-lovers.
