HUNTLY CASTLE

We were impressed when we drove up to Huntly Castle and saw the huge round tower and the rectangular wall. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that this was just a part of this site. There are actually evidence and ruins of three castles here.

The most impressive structure is the fifteenth century castle that is seen upon arrival. It was the palatial residence of the Gordon family and was remodeled and extended in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to entertain royalty. The motte of the oldest twelfth century castle that was here can still be seen. The foundation of a fourteenth century tower house is also present along with several out buildings.

The castle has a long and colorful history including fire and being ravaged by war. It was formerly known as Strathbogie Castle but that name was changed in 1506.

Huntly Castle is now maintained by Historic Scotland. We enjoyed our visit her and would recommend it to any castle enthusiast.
